Why you won't get a ranking here
Public blockchain data cannot tell where you stand among bitcoin holders:
- One person can own several addresses, sometimes hundreds.
- One address can hold the funds of many users, especially on an exchange.
- A balance visible on the blockchain does not always identify its economic owner.
Instead of a fake "global top", this calculator asks a different question: what share of the population could own as much?

- 21 million BTC: a rounded, conventional cap. The protocol's issuance schedule actually tops out at 20,999,999.9769 BTC. The calculations on this page use 21,000,000 BTC, or 2,100,000,000,000,000 sats.

- Supply already issued. The sum of the block rewards set by the protocol, from the first block to the latest known block: 50 BTC per block at first, halved every 210,000 blocks. The latest block height comes from the public API of mempool.space, which the site queries at most every 6 hours. This definition counts the 50 BTC of the very first block, which cannot be spent, and deducts neither the rare rewards miners never claimed, nor lost bitcoins, nor those not for sale. So it says nothing about the bitcoins actually available to buy.
- Calculation. In whole satoshis, with no intermediate rounding. Only the results shown are rounded, with enough digits that one satoshi never becomes "0%".
Why 21 million bitcoins?
The protocol creates new bitcoins with every block, roughly every 10 minutes. The reward started at 50 BTC per block. It is cut in half every 210,000 blocks, about every four years: that's the halving. Add up all those rewards and you land just under 21 million, at exactly 20,999,999.9769 BTC. "21 million" is the rounded figure. This cap comes from the protocol's current rules, the ones the network's nodes enforce today.
How much BTC do you need to "have some"?
You never need a whole bitcoin. One bitcoin divides into 100 million satoshis, and every fraction counts: 0.01 BTC is 1,000,000 sats, and already 0.0000000476% of the maximum supply, one share out of 2.1 billion.
Dividing more finely doesn't create bitcoins. Counting in sats is like counting in cents instead of francs: the amount stays the same. 21 million BTC is 2,100,000,000,000,000 sats, no more, no less.
Lost bitcoins, a number nobody knows
Some bitcoins are lost: misplaced keys, thrown-away drives, inheritances without a password. Nobody can give an exact number, because a bitcoin that hasn't moved in ten years may also belong to someone very patient. Published estimates vary widely. So this calculator subtracts none of them: all its figures refer to the maximum supply or to the supply already issued, with no deduction.
Bitcoin per person: a thought experiment
Nobody is proposing to hand out bitcoins in equal shares. The calculation gives an order of magnitude: against about 8.22 billion people, 21 million BTC comes to 0.00255617 BTC per person, or 255,617 sats. Owning one whole bitcoin means holding about 391 times that share.
Scarcity does not guarantee the price
A limited supply is not enough to push a price up. People also have to want to hold the asset, today and tomorrow. Scarcity is a property of the protocol; demand can't be programmed. This calculator measures the first and predicts nothing about the price.

How many bitcoins could each person on Earth have?
With an estimated world population of 8.22 billion (World Bank, 2025), an equal split of the 21 million BTC would give 0.00255617 BTC per person, or 255,617 sats. It is a theoretical calculation: nobody shares out bitcoins this way.
What percentage of the 21 million is my amount?
Divide your amount by 21 million, then multiply by 100. For example, 0.01 BTC is 0.0000000476% of the maximum supply, one share out of 2.1 billion. The calculator does this to the satoshi, with no intermediate rounding.
Can I find out my ranking among holders?
No. The blockchain shows addresses and their balances, not people. One person can spread their bitcoins across many addresses, and a single exchange address can hold the funds of thousands of customers. A "top 1% of holders" calculated from a simple amount would therefore be made up. This calculator measures theoretical scarcity, not a ranking.
What is the difference between an address and a person?
An address is an identifier that can receive bitcoins. A wallet can create as many as it wants, often a new one for each payment received. So one person can have many addresses, and one address can belong to a company holding the bitcoins of many users. Counting addresses is not counting people.
Have all bitcoins already been created?
No. More than 20 million BTC have already been issued, and the calculator shows the exact figure at the latest known block. The rest arrives more and more slowly, because the miners' reward is halved about every four years. The last satoshis should be issued around 2140.
Are lost bitcoins taken into account?
No, and that is deliberate. Nobody knows how many bitcoins are really lost, and published estimates disagree. Rather than subtracting an uncertain figure, the calculator works with the maximum supply and the supply already issued, with no deduction. The share actually in circulation is lower, in a proportion nobody knows precisely.
