How the converter calculates BTC to CHF, EUR and USD

The calculation fits on one line. Amount in BTC × price of one bitcoin = amount in currency. The other way round, you divide: amount in currency ÷ price of one bitcoin = amount in BTC.

An example, with a price picked to keep the numbers round: if 1 BTC is worth CHF 80,000, then 0.05 BTC is worth CHF 4,000. And CHF 100 buys 0.00125 BTC, which is 125,000 sats.

The calculator never rounds along the way. It only rounds what it shows: to the satoshi for bitcoin, so 8 decimal places at most, and to the cent for currencies, except for amounts under one cent, which are shown in more detail. You can swap the direction as many times as you like, your starting amount won't move by a single cent.

Bitcoin in satoshis: the smallest unit

One bitcoin is divided into 100,000,000 satoshis, often called sats. The name is a nod to Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. So one sat is 0.00000001 BTC: the eighth decimal place, the smallest amount a Bitcoin transaction can record.

Counting in sats makes small amounts readable. Nobody remembers "0.00125 BTC". "125,000 sats" sticks. To go from BTC to sats, multiply by 100 million. To go back to BTC, divide.

You don't need to buy a whole bitcoin: that's exactly what sats are for.

Indicative price or actual amount: why they differ

The price shown here is a reference price: the median price that mempool.space observes across several exchanges. It's the right number to get an idea. It's not the amount you will end up with.

When you buy or sell, the provider takes its fees. It often builds a margin into its price as well, the spread. If your account is in francs and the platform quotes in euros, a currency conversion is added. And if you withdraw your bitcoins to your own wallet, there are withdrawal fees on top.

The result: when you buy, you get slightly fewer sats than the calculation shows. When you sell, slightly fewer francs. The right reflex is to compare the final amount you actually receive, not the percentage in the ad. I explain how in my guide Buying Bitcoin in Switzerland.

How do I convert bitcoin to Swiss francs?

Keep CHF as the currency, pick BTC or sats in the bitcoin field, then type your amount in that field: the value in francs shows up right away. The calculation is your amount in BTC multiplied by the price of one bitcoin in CHF. For the reverse calculation, type directly in the francs field.

How many satoshis are in one bitcoin?

Exactly 100,000,000, one hundred million. So one satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC, and 1,000 sats are 0.00001 BTC.

Why does the price differ from one platform to another?

Each platform has its own buyers and sellers: its price depends on the orders sitting on it at that moment. Add its fees, the gap between its buy and sell prices, and the currency it quotes in. On large platforms the differences usually stay small. They widen on smaller ones, or when the market moves fast. This converter shows a median price, not the price of one particular platform.

How often are prices updated?

The site fetches a new price from mempool.space at most every 10 minutes, and mempool.space recalculates its own about every 5 minutes. This is not real time: depending on when you open the page, the price is anywhere from a few minutes to about twenty minutes old. The date and time of the last successful update are shown under the result. If the source stops responding, the last valid price stays on screen, with a warning as soon as it gets old.
